I’m on amateur hour (or hours by now) figuring out how to build up my first wheel. I had the LBS cut the spokes for 3 cross on my 29inch rim with a 28h hub, and started lacing it up by following Sheldon Browns guide to wheel building…only to finish the last spoke and see my valve hole poking out in the middle of a spoke cluster. Damn

I can’t think of a fix to this because the Raceface rim I’m using has alternating holes so moving everything over by one wouldn’t work, unless it would be fine to start lacing non drive side first?? Also I can’t just flip the rim because I’m following the guide printed on the rim for drive side/non drive side.

Bike wrench,

Please help me

This is pretty standard, but I guess the big question is are you absolutely 100% sure you’ve laced the drive-side spokes into the correct holes? (And thus also the non-drive-side spokes into the correct hole)

The spokes should go into the hole that minimise the amount of bending on the spoke and spoke nipple interface.

  2. Do not move the spokes on the dynamo connector side, move the spokes on the disc side two holes? Unless there is something I am missing that seems like the solution.

Personally I’ve always laced 28 spoke rims as two cross. Not a fan of how tight towards the spoke heads the first cross ends up on three cross…

    1. If you worked with the manual from Sheldon Brown the trailing spokes should run along the inside of the flange (with the spoke head on the outside of the flange). Your trailing spokes are on the outside. So maybe you turned the hub clockwise instead of counter clockwise?

    2. Put in the key spoke and then work always away from the valve hole. Like the other (left) side trailing spoke behind the key spoke, the right side cross laced spoke behind the second trailing spoke, the left side cross laced spoke behind the right side cross laced spoke. The point where you can most easily make a mistake is, when you start cross lacing. Stay aware of what side of the hub belongs to the right and to the left when you start cross lacing and work away from the valve hole.
