I have built so many of these bikes, and you will end up replacing many parts on it. It’s a decent ish bike but super low specced. Might be better off getting something a little older with better components.

The frame is a decent frame but I agree with other comments, it’s a super low spec for components. I guess it depends on the terrain you ride and your skill level, but I’ve seen people outgrow this particular bike pretty fast

If it’s your fist bike I say talk him down to 1k and you will be happy. It will be a fun bike to upgrade while you get better and realize what you would like to upgrade and what not. A good bike to learn with, you gotta ride some crappy components to truly appreciate the good stuff
