I’m looking at the Avalanche comp and Ozark Trail ridge as my first bike. It’s a 120 dollar difference. I am looking to ride mostly single track as that’s what my local trails are. I was thinking on upgrading whatever bike I buy over time as I progress but I need a second opinion as to which bike I should buy.

I’d search for a used hardtail. If you’re dead set on these two, go for the GT
Check out Berm Peak on YouTube, he really likes the Ozark Trail, but he definitely did some upgrades.
At this price range you shouldn’t be buying new. Look on marketplace for something under $600. In my area you can get an entry level Specialized/Trek/Giant and sometimes you can even get lucky and find something super solid for under $600. If you are worried about issues with used, ask a local bike shop to check it out before you buy.
Search facebook marketplace. The 3 things I’d want on an entry level hardtail: Hydraulic Disk brakes, 1×11 or 1×12 drivetrain, dropper post. Anything less and you’ll end up spending more to upgrade the bike in a year. I got a used Co-op hardtail for $750 with all 3 of those things
