Looking at treks entry level hardtails, they seem to cost around $1000 brand new. But if you were to try and build a entry level bike part by part it would end up costing double that.
Right now im trying to buy a 2nd set of basic rims so I can have a backup set of wheels for my bike – looking at prices I might as well buy a whole used bike from facebook or craigslist.

Not sure about that site, but thats a brand new x-caliber for $400, about the same Id pay for rims.
Am I missing something here?
EDIT: Realized the site I linked was most likely a scam, but still used prices are similar.

Bike companies order components in bulk so they get a discount

Many times, the rims (and other trim components) are lower quality than anything you will find off the shelf. It doesn’t really make sense for a company to advertise the inexpensive parts to sell so you won’t see them on websites, etc. That said, a large distributor like J&B will likely have something closer to what came stock on your bike.
