does anybody know what's the cause or possible cause of this? it's very annoying – if I'm not pushing on the left pedal then it's not happening.

I had that on my Trek bike, soon I greased the bearings of the faulty pedal it all went “normal”. How long do you have it? Still in warranty? Take it to the seller, if out of warranty, and you don’t mind doing it, you can see a video on how to do it, if you drive here to Copenhagen 🇩🇰 I can do it for free 😁
That sounds like you need a new bottom bracket.
