I picked up this Aluminum Schwinn MP21 from FB and did a cursory check for cracks before I took it home – head tube and dropouts mainly. Everything looked ok.

When I got it on the rack I noticed the paint chipping near the head tube (missed it earlier) and now I'm thinking it's been in a head-on collision at some point.

Also, there's good amount of damage on the chainstay from the chain or chainrings – not enough clearance there or something. I haven't pulled the cranks off yet to get a good look.

My plan was to fix this thing up into a commuter I could do some gravel/trail riding with nothing intense. But the damage from both of these things making me second guess if it's worth the time/$$.

I'm wondering what you all think? Is this beauty cooked?

  1. Headtube is cracked. Dead as disco, so salvage all the good parts if you wanna make house music.
