So i bought a bike with belt in the hope they would survive winter better than steal chains. It works. But only for me. When my kids (big kid 18 and 20 strong and pushing and the pedals) borrow it, they broke the chain 2 times the last months. Are the belts generally not strong? Can something be defect with bike? It is the city version of belts from gates carbon drive

It’s possible that Blut the belt bit the frame is the problem here.
When, as you say, your boys push hard in the pedal the frame will bend due to the forces pulling the drive side (right) of the wheel forward.
If this is significant enough the rear sprocket comes out of alignment to the front sprocket enough to derail the belt.
Belts cannot handle disalignment well and have quite narrow tolerances for the parallelity of those sprockets.
In the picture, the lower piece of the belt right to the shoe shows marks from the center bridge of the sprockets coming out of the intended groove.
I have had my belt for about 4 years, 64 miles a week with hills and had no issues.
Watch the video for some clues:

Just don’t let your kids use your bike. Everything breaks with enough misuse
It might be that your belt wasn’t tensioned correctly.
Could be the belt was on too tight.
Could also be the new belt was pinched during instalation. Of the belt was shipped incorrectly it could couse this type of issue.
What kind of belde are you using? Of you are not already using it; use the cdx belt, they are made to withstand high torque usage for mid motors etc.
