Looking for a starter bike for myself (45m). Just looking to ride mostly around neighborhood and bike paths. Maybe some light gravel. Don't want to break the bank on a ride just yet. Narrowed it down to the following:
1)Trek Dualsport 1(I can't find the 2 or 3 near me) I found a DS2 but its an XL and might be too big for my 5'11 frame.

2) Canyon Roadlite 5. Comes with SRAM Apex 1/Shimano MT200

I know that the roadlite has better components, especially for only 100$ more (seems lije too good of a deal).. One of my concerns is warranty issues. I've heard Canyon customer saervice is a mixed bag, while my LBS offers an extended service plan (including adjustments).
Also, im concerned about buying the bike online without trying it out first. Any advice is appreciated.

  1. These are very different bikes. The Canyon has an aggresive geometry, almost like a road bike. The Dual Sport is much more relaxed and may be better for a . The Canyon is definitely a higher quality bike and great value for the money. However, the riding position may not be ideal as a first time rider.

An XL of the Trek would certainly be too big for you at 5’11 – you definitely want a large. Size is probably the most important thing when buying a bike — a bike that is too large for you will be uncomfortable and likely painful for you to ride, and you won’t enjoy cycling.

for a first bike, I’d likely look at a hybrid like a Trek FX, Giant Escape, Specialized Sirrus, Marin Fairfax, Cannondale quick – I could go on, basically every major brand has some version of this type of bike and there aren’t a lot of differences between the brands, only between spec levels. The most important thing is getting the right size – don’t force an XL just because you find a good deal, it is not worth it.
