So this is my second try with mustache bars. I know you have to get them level with the seat, I’ve seen the Mustache bar info page on Stanford.edu, and I played with the lever placement to see what feels best. I’m too spoiled from modern road controls to get used to these. Luckily, I’ve collected some other alternative bars and I think I’ll settle with the North Road bars and a slick Nitto Dynamic 2 stem. Me personally I like the setup in the last photo. Also my OCD makes me want to paint your stem red to match the fork.
I tried moustache bars, once. I hated them, I just couldn’t see the appeal. My boss has revisited that same pair with reverse levers like those on old French bikes, which will probably do wonders for making them actually useful, but then you have to ask “Why even bother with moustache bars?” An upside down (or even right way up) north road bar is every bit as adequate, but far cheaper and practical without the need for drop bar levers.
You have the narrow portion for braking when you want the most control, and the wide portion for just cruising about. Not to mention, on an old mountain bike they increase the reach significantly, more than modern drops in many cases.
