My primary ride has been a Cannondale Bad Boy 4 Hybrid that I purchased back in 2016.
I'd like to start getting into gravel / bikepacking and found a '23 Poseidon Redwood (Deep Cherry limited release Wine) on FB Marketplace for $500. Retails for $849 new. I'm set to purchase & pick it up this weekend. It's all stock, but comes with a set of new Gravel King tires.
Multiple Reddit / YouTube reviews of the Redwood highly recommend upgrading the wheelset to the Mason x Hunt 650b. As it subtracts 3-4ish pounds from the total weight of the bike.
So my questions / comments for the sub are…
- Where would you say is the best place to purchase Mason x Hunt 650b from? At the time of this posting, they are listed for $429.00 (with a $50 off coupon) on the Hunt site.
- Next to Mason x Hunt, are there any other recommendations for 650b wheelsets?
- Another suggested upgrade was the Jagwire Compressionless Bicycle Brake Housing.
- With my hybrid, I've gotten into the habit of clipping in. Is clipping in recommended on a Gravel / MTB?
- What are your recommended road/gravel tires for this bike?
All that said, I'm excited and hope that this Facebook Marketplace purchase goes through!

Or just ride it for a bit before you upgrade the wheelset. That being said, Hunt wheels as far as I know are only available from their website or used locally.
The stock wheels on the redwood are prob nicer than the 2016 hybrid ones you’re running so I’d save some cash and run the stock wheels for a bit and see how you feel then upgrade down the line if you feel like it
I clip in on gravel sometimes and sometimes I don’t depends on the length of ride and the trail. Do what you feel most comfortable with on the trails you go on.
Good chance you might have even seen my video 😂. But the hunt wheels are amazing . I actually went 700c on mine . No regrets and every wheelset from them have been solid for me .
#1, 2 and 3 is to do the compressionless brake housing. Brakes are good to have, and the stock setup more than sucks. You can also go with cable-pull hydraulics, but do the cables first anyway.
I’d be doing something about those brakes before I did anything else… I’d also pull everything off the frame to make sure it’s put together properly, check for rusty or rough feeling bearings, check chain & drivetrain wear, clean everything up, & lube it properly. Upgrading a bunch of relatively expensive components right off the bat on a budget used bike without having any experience to know whether the upgrades actually make a tangible difference for you, is overall financially unwise
