My son is 9 and has been riding bikes since he was 3. We got him is first mountain bike 3 weeks ago and he has been hanging out at the local pump track and we have riden the trail together 3 times this week. I always tell him to exceed his skill level and to not confuse confidence with skill and he does pretty well. Today he got out ahead of me and before I knew it he was flying through the air and over the bars. My heart sank. He attempted to go off a 4 foot drop with about half the speed he needed and landed front tire first on the top of the landing. He was a bit shaken up and his forearms were scratched up but otherwise ok. Thank God he was wearing his helmet because this could have been much much worse. His bike was fine and he jumped right back on and hit a few jumps on the way out of the trail and straight to the pump track. He said he learned his lesson and will be wearing his helmet everytime he gets on his bike. Now it's off to the stor to get him a new helmet. Have fun and be safe.

He won’t be wearing THAT helmet though right? An impact like that will write a helmet off; especially one of those polystyrene ones.

I know this from experience. Fell off my bike a few years ago, wearing a similar helmet. I didn’t think my head hit the floor that badly and continued with the helmet. Got back to the car and chucked it in the back, at which point it split along the fracture lines I couldn’t see before.
