So one of these popped off while riding, and I’m not sure if this clip-on piece is needed. Is it ok to take this off,or will it lead to issues for the pedal?
helps to keep gunk out, try to put it back on. otherwise, I’d put some protective barrier (oil/grease) inside to prevent moisture.

it’s not needed til you slice your ankle open on the sharp edges it normally covers

Better to have it on, you’ll be happy it’s there when you end up having to use those threads for a crank puller

To get it on, place it before you tighten the screws on the crank. Otherwise it is a pita to get in there.

Only if you want dirt, sand and road grease in your crank threads. Also keeps them from getting bunged by something. Yes, you should leave it on. No, it will not affect the pedal. Besides, aero!

It’s not needed per se. But depending on how much water and dirt will come in those threads, you might regret not using it when trying to remove the crank

Nah

TLDR: yes
It keeps the thread area clean for when you need the threads later.

It’s not important. Don’t worry about it.
It’s a dust cover – just put it back on
