Metra (Chicago regional rail) says they must fit under your legs within the confines of a single seat. I’ve never had any issues taking up a 2-person bench with me and my bike.
I’m not at all worried about ever being rejected for it, even if it was a jammed full car.
There are a lot of options with the Brompton. I could throw it on a seat and stand in front where my legs would go if I was sitting. I could go upstairs and throw it on the luggage tray. I can tuck it in by the full-sized bikes and bungee it in place. I could stand with the seat between my legs.
Sucks your paint got scratched, but I try to just see it as battle scars. Bikes are a tool, made to be used. A little bit of hard use means you’re getting the most out of them.

Honestly I didn’t know about the under seat thing.
I usually just ride in the bike car or put them on the floor under the luggage carts.
Man that sucks

I put mine in a bag, then it’s not a folding bike it’s a carry-on bag
