Been messing around with this 98 Palomar for a drop bar conversion. I want to switch to cantis from V brakes.
I can't get my hands on one of the old style guides GT used in the 90's I tinkered this together in my garage last night…..Will this work?
Why or why not. Looking for constructive feedback.

Love the ingenuity on display here. I see no reason why this won’t work.
That said, if it were my bike I would keep my eyes open for a seatpost bolt mounted cable stop to use if only for aesthetics.
My concern with this setup is 1) that cross bar will flex downward, decreasing your braking force, and 2) the angle of cable pull is not directly above the cantilevers, pulling them more forward and further reducing your braking force by possibly changing the pad position on the rims.
Cable hangers are pretty cheap and there are a myriad of designs to help you figure out what will work best with your setup (and look the coolest)
My concern would be deflection of that bar creating brake chatter. You’d be better off with a smooth arch, maybe bolted into the inside of the bosses.
Really though, who needs the rear brake? Make sure the front brake is strong.
Looks kinda flexy. It will work but the brakes might feel a bit squishy and not be as effective
Just to be clear, you don’t have the goofy plastic thing that clamps to the seat tube?

I do have a seat post stop. But because of the frame shape it won’t work

If you like it but it’s flexing too much you could buy a bit of aluminum angle and put that on top. It’s sold in a lot of hardware stores as trim for plywood in the really small sizes.
