So I’ve taken delivery of this carrera virtuoso steel frame road bike from the 90s. It’s a cromo frame but everything is working although the drivetrain is a little crusty and the brakes perform like 90s calliper brakes with dry pads.
I’m looking to turn it into a comfy winter bike. It has a shimano freehub built on Mavic wheels and looks like it’ll take wider than the 23c tyres currently on it. Upgrades I think need to be made are:
– new callipers and brake pads
– new shifters, cranks and bb, cassette, chain, mechs.
Upgrades I’d also like to make include:
– Carbon seat post for comfort
– quill to ahead adapter for modern bar and stem combos
– some new sks mudguards I have in the garage to go onto this
I’m looking at used Tiagra/105 level drivetrain upgrades, maybe 10sp, but haven’t tried Campag or some of the Chinese challenger brands.
My question to the group would be what would you do to this? Which upgrades would you make and, keeping the budget modest, what would you hope to turn this into?
My long term aim is to use this as a project bike to slowly upgrade until I buy a better quality steel frame in the future but that’s years away.

Shimano R7000, new wheels, compact handlebar, new saddle if needed, personally I’d skip the carbon seatpost but you do you.
