Yesterday I bought a 1990’s rockhopper at an absolute steal and somehow didn’t notice an absolutely huge crack in the back of the seatpost. Bought it to restore the frame & put some modern parts on it.
To me it looks like whoever had it originally cut the seat post and then tried to force the wrong sized seatpost in, only got it so far down and then they’ve had some sort of an impact to make such an awful crack.
Is the bike done for or can I get a welder to fix it? It’s a steel frame so I feel like not all is lost but also I’m pretty sure I really F’d up by buying it.
Any advice is much appreciated… ideally want to save the frame.

It’s repairable, but the repair will be more than the frame is worth.
Not sure where you’re based but those sorts of frames usually get thrown away for free or the complete bike for maybe £50
Look for rust. If its ok, it weldable. Althought you’d have to bend it back. I’m not familiar with the process.

There are ways. Get a steel seat post and make sure it’s the right height and well past the tear. Bend the tear back as good as possible and weld it back onto the seatpost. The thicker material makes this much easier.
If you decide to ride it, drill a hole in each end of the crack to prevent it from progressing
Looks to me like someone cut the frame, probably to get a seat post _out_ rather than in – i.e. aluminium seatpost fused with the steel frame.
Not sure of any other way that could have happened.
