Rattling and side to side movement in my cassette. Cassette is put on brand new mavics by the bike shop, is something not tight? Is this kind of play expected?

Very bad. This will allow the individual cogs to eat into the hub, I think it’s called hub bite. You need to add the spacer behind to tightly clamp all the cogs together. Unless it’s a road specific 11 speed cassette it is designed to fit on a 10 speed hub.
What gear ratio is the cassette? If the low sprocket is 34 or more it likely needs a 1.85 spacer and with mavics often an additional 1mm
You either need to tighten your lockring to spec, or if it is already torqued then you need a slightly thicker spacer behind the cassette.
You need a mavic specific spacer, same here on my mavic aksiums my cassette was loose as well.

So I’ve had similar issue reservicing my hubs. If you tightened the lock nut super tight and it’s still got play it means some of your cogs aren’t on properly. They fit but they are just rotated wrong
Makes sure the 3-4 smallest cogs teeth line up when you put em back on. Then tighten. Should fix it, did for me.
