shouldn’t the wheels/tires have some regulation on them in such a sport? shame that somone won because they used a larger diameter wheel combo.

It is insane. But it reminds me of F1 a bit in that it isn’t really that rare to have +/- 1/1000th of a second. When you consider that 10+ riders/cars are posting times within a 10th of a second over a lap, it’s only really 1 in a hundred of so that they post times within the same thousandth.

Between this and the Noah Lyles 100m finals finish, I had look up how photo finish cameras work cause that margin is insane. There’s multiple articles/videos about it, but basically:
A photo finish camera works using strip photography – a sensor is fixed on the finish line from a high angle, taking a rapid succession of images through a narrow slit as athletes cross the line. The images are then arranged horizontally: the white background is the finish line’s multiple reproductions. The ones used for the Olympics can take up to 40,000 frames per second.
