After leaving the bike industry as a shop manager/wrench/wheel builder 18ish years and 30lbs ago, I am ready to get back into it. I prefer hardtails and being 6' 220lbs now, my love of steel frames is more relevant than ever.
The SS/MTB in the pic was stolen about 6 years ago, was a true mechanics special and came is at about 27lbs. It was a lovely bike to ride and now I'm looking to replace it. It was a Marin steel full rigid frame to start with, had hand built wheels with an XTR 970 front hub and a Surly 1×1 rear hub to Mavic rims, an entry level Marzocchi air fork, TiTec ti flat bar, ti hardware where I could and just rode nicely.
I recently picked up the Cinelli frame in the 2nd pic to build up, however it is a 1" head tube so i won't be able to fully recreate it.
Now my dilemma, I've also found a 2019 Marin Pine Mountain 1 rigid locally for $400 I'm seriously considering and adding front suspension and carbon wheels to, or just to go with one of the teir 2 brand frames in carbon and build from there. Looking at DIY Carbon Bikes 27.5" hard tail as well.
