Would this be a good first bike for XC/trail riding for £500? I ride a bit of gravel on my steel commuter so I’m a bit better than “complete beginner” and have rented a bike at a park before.

Looks good. Front chainring looks worn but its a wear part. Easy to change

I’m selling a lovely Polygon XC bike if you’re interested!

Looks like a good bike. Someone obviously rode it a lot, and took care of it. These are good signs- no mechanical surprises, maintained bearings and suspension.
I would recommend taking it to a shop and having them give it a check, but you probably don’t even need to do that.

That is a very good deal, a solid bike with a large support network via local bike shops. Yeah, that is worth jumping on. Side note, when you decide to get another bike down the road, you will probably get close if not what you paid for this one.
