



Thought this might be interesting to some of you.
Was out riding yesterday and just before my awaited descent, a stone rolled under my rear tire and bucked my rear derailleur completely out of whack. First thought was the worst, but I soon saw the derailleur hanger had done it's job.
I knew the UDH was meant to take lateral impacts like any other hanger, but also that it was designed to spin 90 degrees to reduce impact on the mech and frame. It worked.
Apparently the UDH is put together by two pieces with different materials. One part that connects to the mech made out of alloy and the part that fits to the frame seems to be made of some sort of hard plastic. Kinda cool.

So, the plastic part of the UDH is strong enough to hold the derailleur in place during normal operations, but weak enough to break and allow the metal part of the UDH to spin backwards should some potentially damaging exterior force be applied to the derailleur. Sounds like an improvement over the all-metal hangers of the past.
