I ordered a new crankset because I wanted to move to single chainring in the front and I looked into the right stuff for me to get but the crankset came without the bit that goes through the bb, is that normal? Do I need an adapter? Did I order the wrong one? Please help.

Looks like you bought the Powerspline compatible version. [SRAM’s website](https://www.sram.com/en/sram/models/fc-sx-1-a1) shows a comparison between this and the version which includes the crankshaft.
