I think version 1 is better for looks and for function. Firstly, it only has 1 red handle. If you have the handle on one side, you’ve thrown the symmetry of the bike off. In front, your bike is still visually balanced. Secondly, the function is better with more of the basket closer to the center line of the direction of travel. If you carry loads in a wide basket, you’ll always be adjusting the weight to make sure it isn’t tilting to one side or throwing off your balance. Also like you said, position 2 is awkward for your cables. From the pictures, it also looks awkward for the hands on the handlebars.
Did you switch the pictures around? Why is everyone saying number 2 is better?
