I’ve been in need of a simple commuter (one that’s not electric or some other weird homemade death trap). I wanted a stump jump since my dad used to have one but found a decent looking rock hopper for $25!
Overall looks decent, it’s got some surface crust for sure but most of it seems to be superficial. Also love how the bars are sun faded, makes me think this thing sat for a long time.
Anyways I’m pretty new to bike building, mechanically inclined but never really worked on bikes all that much.
Is any of this worth keeping? Anything that should definitely be replaced? Looking to go 1 by, any suggestions or options for the rear I should look into? Is it considered entirely wack to just remove two of the front chainrings from the crank and run it like that? Are the brakes okay to keep? Probably new pads?
Thanks yall!

I am always amazed when I see bikes that people never rode. It looks like you may have found one. I would replace all the contact points to start (grips, tires, pedals, seat, brake pads), regrease the headset and bb, chain, and ride it for a while. Then go from there.
It is not entirely wack to remove 2 of the chainrings.
