Just picked up this late-90s Gary Fisher Aquila for 50 big ones. Plan on using it maybe for some camping (not necessarily bike-packing) trips, around town, rides with my daughter – general stuff where I wouldn’t be grabbing my trail bike. I’ve got some racks I can put it, that’ll be a start.
I have another 26er currently set up as a 1×9- if I swap that wheel over, would a 10, 11, 12 speed cassette fit on that?
Any chance that old fork can feel decent again or would you just go with a corrected rigid option?
Yes, I know this is the best photo you’ve ever seen. It’s in the a storage room at work, where I met the seller.
Thanks 🤙🏻

I’d plan on swapping the fork, but I’m sure some masochists would say run it.
Depending on the wheel, some will run up to 12 speed hg-compatible, some won’t.
Otherwise I’d try for a shorter stem and wider bars and go shred.
A SRAM NX 12 speed cassette will probably fit that wheel. That’s what I did with my ’90s 1x conversion. I went with a rigid fork personally. Bike is in my profile if you are curious.
Just ride it a couple of times. It’ll tell you what it needs.
