Recumbents had been around long before that, having been banned from racing by the UCI in 1934 for being “too aerodynamic.” While feet-first is certainly a better way to go into an accident than head first, many recumbents are simply too low to the ground to be considered any safer than “regular” bikes. They are, however, very comfortable if you’re a casual rider just out to enjoy riding.
