We had a wedding party at my house, and the guests went into my tiny cellar which was crammed with bikes.
How many bikes have you got in there!
Only 7 I replied, and my wife immediately shouted 13!
I checked. 13 bikes. Didn’t include the off-road tandem as two bikes either.

my wife and i have a dozen or so. over the years i’ve tried to eliminate overlap in the collection and remove bikes i legit don’t ride anymore, like my supersix race bike or cyclocross bikes.

I have a literal truck load of bikes. Its not ideal but the number of personal bikes is about 15, mainly getting 3-4 some action. I dream of having a solid 2 bikes only !

The most bikes I’ve had were 8. It was dumb. I bought a stand to stack 4 on two sides, and still had to line up the others around it in an apartment. It drove my wife mad and she was right to be upset.
Over time I culled the fleet down and today I have a 96 Diamondback Apex SE for trails, an 85 Mongoose ATB for cruising, a 1990 Peugeot Triathlon for paved cycling, and a 2021 Mongoose Supergoose I built up mostly because I could never afford one as a kid.
I ride all of these bikes, and my policy these days is that if I don’t know that I will actually ride a bike, I won’t buy it. It’s really easy to go on FB Marketplace and Craigslist and get all worked up over cheap bikes that could become projects, but IMO, there’s nothing more depressing than looking at a bike or a pile of bikes that aren’t being ridden.
If I don’t ride a bike, I move it to someone that will and is excited to do it.

4 at once was my top. Now I keep my one gravel bike and rotate through secondary bikes, selling one and buying another. Looking forward to the days of no longer being in an apartment lol.

For me, the magic number is the number of bikes you can keep in operating condition. I have a new rule and it’s working well for me: if I have a bike that’s not working for a considerable period of time, I fix it and sell it.

That’s 10 plus my brompton and 4 others I keep in NYC for when I’m there.
