I bought my Voyageur panniers back in the 1980s for a long daily commutes in Tucson, Arizona, and for a couple of long tours that I did at the time. They hold a ton and have served me well.
Sadly, I think the time has come to replace them. They leak like sieves in the rain, the bungee securing system is a pain, the backs are starting to bend, and the hooks don’t match modern rack diameters.
Aside from nostalgia, things that are holding me back on finding replacements are wanting something of equivalent volume (big) and finding bags with at least one and preferably two external pockets; I find the pockets very handy for tools and for rain gear. I would prefer something in black or gray with a quick connect system. Waterproof also be nice.
What recommendations do you have for my daily commute where I’m often carrying quite a volume, and that could ideally accommodate some future solo tours? I’m not afraid to drop a bit of money on these. After all, it’s been over 30 years since I’ve had to make a purchase!

If you want stuff that lasts decades and you never have to worry about quality related issues, its hard to go look beyond Ortlieb. From 12 litres to all the way upto 25 litres, their panniers will do all you ask them to do and more. Plus, never seen any pannier as waterproof as Ortlieb. And they are not crazy expensive too like some new age funky ‘gravel panniers’.
I realise you know about ortliebs, but want to say that they are incredible. 3 years of comutting, so far, and no pain. Super waterproof, and Urban has a nice carry strap
