My son and his best friend just took their first (short) trip without and parents or adults. It was only 10 miles to a neighboring town, but still pretty cool! They are both 13. The route is all MUP, so no traffic. My son has done that route with me, but never alone. They got pizza at their destination, then rode home.
I’m stoked about it, but my son seems to think it’s no big deal.

Forgot to mention the bikes. Both 90s MTBs. My son has an M700 and his friend has a Zaskar LE.
That’s an iconic photo you snapped. Hang on to that one. No big deal to them, of course; they’re just thirteen year olds who went on a bike ride together. Probably a bigger deal that they bought pizza by themselves than that they biked it. *Huge* parenting moment, seeing that independence. To make you feel better/worse, I’ll share one of my favorite mother-daughter poems about a child riding away on a bike, Linda Pastan’s “[To A Daughter Leaving Home](https://www.loc.gov/programs/poetry-and-literature/poet-laureate/poet-laureate-projects/poetry-180/all-poems/item/poetry-180-075/to-a-daughter-leaving-home/).”
