After 600 miles with my first e-handcycle (I posted about it last summer), I decided to upgrade to one with a larger wheel (from 12 to 16 inch). It is the same base product as before – the Rio Dragonfly, and the same mid drive motor added – tsdz2 with coaster brake.

The wheel upsize did all I had hoped for – the bike is faster and more satisfying to pedal. I can go 13-15mph easily without feeling exhausted. It's also easier to lock up because the fork is higher off the ground. It works well for my use which is in the city on pavement only. It still does okay on uphills due to the greater weight on the front drive wheel.

Other improvements include
1-tiny wheels in the kickstand to help push it around when it's not attached to my wheelchair
2-two batteries, one that is mounted lower beside the fork and counterbalanced by a u lock and gear pouch. The lower center of gravity helps give the front wheel traction. When going on short trips I leave the big shark battery off and use only the small bottle battery. Both batteries are 36v.
3-paddles attached to the grip shift so I can change gears by moving my knee side to side a little
4-dash cam (blue sky sea b1w model) powered by the tsdz2 controller
5-front rack that makes the device easier to lock up and move around when unattached to the wheelchair
6-relocated brake lever so I can actuate the chatter brake and the caliper brake at the same time for when going down steep hills
7-steering knob/handle for making sharp turns when I take one hand off the pedals to push a back wheel.
8-chain tensioner to stop the chain from falling off the cog when riding over train tracks or bumps
9-larger chainring, went from the tsdz2 stock 42t to 50t which helped increase the max speed.

Hope this gives someone ideas for how they can get riding more!

  1. That is a sweet ride and an inspiration to me if I should ever be unable to pedal with my legs. 👍🚴
