FWIW I love my bikes unweighted by a rack or fenders. I so use them from time to time, fenders especially during the rainy season where I live. But every time I take them and/or the rack off I always notice how much zippier my bikes ride. I will say Ive found front rack less noticeable in that regard.
This sub isn’t as militant as the bike commuting one, but I think backpacks are generally pooh-poohed but I say screw that, just ride how you like! I use them less in summer due to sweat, but I love biking with a backpack or messenger bag.
Ditto man; I had a rear rack on for a while to fit the vibe here, but then once I took it off for some frame maintenance and I just could not stop admiring how much better it looked with no rack.

Whatevs… but those 80-90’s MTBs typically have decently long chainstays that will give reasonable heel clearance for panniers.
