I was told to only lube the top of the chain to avoid attracting dirt. But now the sides has some surface rust on it. Is it bad? How can i avoid?

Are you using a rag a few minutes after applying lube? That helps spread the excess over the unlubed parts of the chain just enough so you don’t get surface rust.
