  1. 42mm is plenty wide for most things. If you’re not going down rooted single track and rock gardens those will do OK.

It does seem like the rim might be a bit narrow for those tires though and they are rounding out a bit too much but likely from the photos.

  2. It depends on where you’re hoping to ride in the highlands. Some of the tracks are essentially pulverized lava gravel and coarse sand, and can be pretty tame. Those tires are probably fine on that terrain. Other tracks are extremely rocky and rugged with many alpine and glacial river crossings. Personally, having traveled much of the interior highlands via 4×4, I wouldn’t trust that particular tire to travel in the highlands – at least I wouldn’t go too far into the interior and risk getting into a situation. Personally, a 40c tire feels too narrow and low volume for that particular terrain. If it were me, I’d probably select a 29er wheelset with at least 45-50c tires, or a 650b wheelset with fat, high-volume tires – but of course that will depend on your bike.

  3. That looks like a marathon mondial. If it is its bomb proof. Take a spare tire with you. Have a good ride
