Hey Andy, quite surprised you didn't check out the Roman Fort at Arbeia (South Shields) – there's an impressive reconstructed (massive) gatehouse in the middle of a housing estate! When I went there 20+ years ago, it was a veritable pea-souper of a fog all over Northumberland!

Thanks Rich. I didn't know about that. I'll check it out as I definitely want to go back and explore that coastline in more depth.
