I’ve had my Cannondale caad 13 105 disc for a little over a month.
At around ~300 miles I started to notice this “clunk” sound when I moved the rear wheel laterally. There is a very minimal amount of play – less than 1mm I’d say – but it does make a noise like something is loose (the video makes it seem like there’s a ton of play because I don’t have a good grip on it; but there’s no perceivable movement in person)
So I take it back to the bike shop and have the mechanic look it over. He states that it doesn’t seem to be enough play to cause an issue, but he takes the rear wheel/cassette/hub assembly apart to “see what he can do”.
The attached video is after he “tightened” the hub. When the wheel is in the frame, it still makes the exact same “clunk” noise as before with slight lateral play back and forth.
He stated that tightening the hub too much can damage the bearings the same as being too loose.
Is this an acceptable amount of play?
Thanks

Too much play. Go to a different shop to get the hub serviced.
So yes take the other commenter’s advice and do get it serviced by someone else, but keep in mind that hub may have a limited shelflife. I looked up this bike on their website and they don’t state which model Formula hub the wheel has, which *can* mean it is not the highest quality one. Formula hubs can vary greatly in quality. At some point you may want to upgrade the whole weelset. I did with a Topstone after the freehub failed and it turned it into a really nice ride
