On that bike it’s a $15 part (plus whatever else it needs) and maybe $75 for labor if the mechanic bills for the whole hour.
You could go to YouTube youniversity and try to learn how to replace and adjust derailleurs. [Park Tools](https://youtube.com/@parktool?si=svGZ1s1ibTA_ZOh5) probably has the best tutorials.
If you haven’t worked on bikes before take it to the local homies
Crikey, yeah you need a new chain, new rear derailleur and I imagine the hanger needs alignment. This isn’t a novice fix sorry
Former bike sales with some decent mechanic chops & plenty of assembly experience. I’m impressed.
I’d start with a new chain and rear derailleur and go from there. It looks like the hanger is fine but hard to tell in pic. It looks like the rear derailleur gave itself up to save the hanger.
What went wrong? The limits on the derailleur may have been set wrong. Should you take it to an LBS? Honestly, the repair bill is going to be close to the purchase price of the bike, depending on how reasonably your LBS is. But its not an easy diy fix without the right tools.

Bent derailleur hanger could do it. Happened to me before. Wind knocked my gravel road bike over. I didn’t notice the bent hangar. All is well until I upshifted enough the derailleur snagged a spoke and ripped it off. I walked home. I never cycled again without a chain breaker. I would have been able to get home single speed style.
