


Because of that bolt on the drivetrain side which stops the derailleur assembly from rotating, the only way I can get my wheel to be straight is by tightening it all the way at the front end of the slot. It looks somewhat sketchy to me. Am I crazy or is this the only way to install the rear tire?

It’s fine. You don’t need the axle to be slammed all the way into the end of the dropout, it’s designed to work perfectly fine where you’ve got yours.
Completely normal, some people even get a spacer that looks similar to what’s on the derailleur on the non-drive side so that they worry less about getting their wheel in straight
Nobody has pointed it out yet but in pic 2 the recessed backing nut appears to be on the wrong side of the dropout, the 9mm bolt should sandwich the derailleur in place and hold it there if you take the wheel out, it is currently sitting proud and wants to bend your axle as you do it up, you can see the air gap if you zoom in on pic 3

I initially had the same thought as you many years ago. Now I ride like you do, and use this arrangement to make sure the chain is tight and the wheel is streight. 👍
If you want it to go all the way, you can use your arms to slightly pry each side outwards as you push the wheel in. You could even use clamps to make it easier. You won’t damage the bike and you’ll get slightly better chain tension.
yes, what you have are called sliding dropouts and theyre meant to be adjustable, as long as you have all of the nut inside of the dropout like you do youll be fine. its only an issue when like half of the nut is hanging out of the dropout
