Ok – what would you propose for locking up that bike to such a poorly designed bike rack?
Look at the silver Specialized road bike one to the left. They locked up their front wheel to the bike rack. There’s a quick release hub on that wheel, so that a thief could undo the quick release and walk away with the whole bike (minus front wheel). Is that a better idea? Blue single-speed guy got the end, so if the mountain bike is your $5000 bike, how are you going to lock it up better?

Blame the infrastructure not the user. The other bikes are not as expensive and the fact that the bike rack only facilitates a locked front wheel.

I’ve been this asshole before. I didn’t feel good about it but I was in a high foot-traffic area known for lots of bike theft in Portland, Oregon. I was on my way home after a long gravel ride. Went longer than expected and was starving. So I dipped into a grocery for snacks. I only had one lock on me and I wasn’t going to risk getting my brand new Diverge stolen. I got some dirty looks as I was locking up but I was in and out in like 15 minutes. Sometimes you just gotta give people the benefit of the doubt.
Also, a lot of places need to give better, more updated options for locking up bikes. Especially in areas known for a lot of bike commuting.

no, it’s a total dick move…. but there is no other way to lock that frame to the stand so the owner has no other choice. why they took their n-thousand dollar bike here is a different question

And that is why this type of rack should almost never be used.
Its a stand; All it does is holds bikes upright; Basically the only use case is at a major cycling event (e.g. a race) where you need to keep lots of bikes upright, but have someone watching them continually.
If the bikes need securing it is nearly completely useless, because it is basically impossible to lock the bike to it.
If you cannot put a d-lock through the rear triangle and part of the rack then you can’t lock a bike up properly.

Not all of us want to shove a wheel in those bender bars, much less lock up with only a front wheel, so that our bike is easy to steal. Clearly 2 other people had the same idea before, this person came along. A simple noodle design is just a bent metal pipe that can be bolted to the concrete. It’s actually cheaper than this style of bike rack, and allows everyone to lock up to the frame rather than the wheel. It’s just that most business owners don’t know about them.

My commuter bike has fenders so I can’t throw my front wheel over the top, not that I ever want to, it damages the frame and paint. I lock up like this when the sides arent available, it’s not your fault that the bike rack sucks, there are better options available. The sides often have jagged tubing sticking out that fucks up the frame too, such a shitty bike rack unfortunately

This is the result of crummy bike racks that can’t handle many bike frames. Advocate for staple racks, oriented in rows.
Yeah that’s a dick move, I would have just hung it over top of the rack if the wheel didn’t fit and locked it up that way.

if you look at the tires you can see that there is no way they would fit the “intended” way and even if they did then it still would be pretty much impossible to lock the bike, which might be fine for the 30 year old city cruisers that are worth like 50 bucks but not for a “nice” bike like this

He had no choice. I’ve done the same before. He can’t put his wheel inside the rack like the other bikes, it doesn’t fit. The 2 rack ends are already taken. People who can physically put their bike inside risk their wheels to be tacoed.

Yes because it is the only way that rack can be used other than using the ends which are already occupied. The bike owner has not taken any usable bike parking spot form anyone else.
