  1. RelentlessFuckery on

I picked this up today for $120. Its a Univega Via Montega. Im not sure what year, but based on the components, early 90s. Its full Exage 500LX, which puts it between 1991 and 1993. The frame is tange. It rides so very very smooth. Its light, snappy, and did I mention smooth? Like buttah.

Based on the story from the person selling it, it was purchased by her Father and he rode it a few times before putting it away and forgetting about it. Based on its condition, and the dust accumulation, the story checks out. Its very close to new condition.

This will mostly be a summer commuter and occasional tour/bikepacker.

I already swapped out that saddle, and would like to do a little bit more to modernize it a bit, mostly around the ergonomics (the narrow handlebar isnt exactly comfortable).

I like the idea of putting drops on it, but comfort is king. Thoughts from the peanut gallery?

If I go with drops, Id like to go with bar end shifters. Im not sure what other options there are that would work with the extant drivetrain without being cludgy.

It has fork braze on eyelets, so Im thinking a front rack?

What does the xbiking hivemind suggest?

  2. I test rode one of these but it was too small. The paint is awesome. Need some pink cable housing. Put a drop bar on it and make it a gravel bike?

For front racks, any low rider rack will mount to the eyelets mid way up and allow you to carry panniers. You also have lots of options for racks that mount to the brake bosses.
