I ride 32mm and it’s perfect for light gravel.

I put wtb byway 34s on and had juuuust enough room to spare

It’s just fine. I’ve ridden plenty of gravel roads on 25 and 28 mm tires, and neither the bike nor the tires suddenly exploded.
The problem with narrow tires are larger pebbles that can easily cause pinch flats, or sidewall cuts if they are sharp. But on many smooth gravel roads those are not really an issue.
Give it a go and decide yourself if you want to go up to 32 mm.

I upgraded to 45 mm maxxis tires because my 37 mm WTB riddlers were pretty scary on steep downhills if the gravel became more than a dusting. I don’t see any reason not to go with the biggest tires your frame can fit

Put the widest tire you can on that. When I went from 30 to 35 the bike felt positively hooligan. 🙂
