So I’ve been looking for a project bike that I can learn to work on during the winter and ride it next season. My buddy offered me to buy his bike but he has no idea what it’s worth and I don’t want to insult him with a low-ball offer. He thinks he can sell the carbon Zipp wheels separately for $1k but I highly doubt that. I believe it’s from 2009 or 2010 with 10-speed Shimano 105 in size 46.5. Thoughts?

Wheels are nice, but 105 10 speed is meh at this point. $1k seems reasonable to me

That’s a really old bike OP. Buy it for $500. That’s a plenty fair price.
Tell your friend to get a video of him selling those wheels for $1,000 so we can all learn. /s
$500 without any wheels at all seems a bit steep still – I’d probably say $350 w/o wheels, $700 with the Zipps. That way the wheels double the value of the bike which seems about accurate and confirms the sellers notion that the wheels are valuable, just nowhere near as much as he thinks. Otherwise the bike is unremarkable and dated – not a bad bike by any means and still good and fast, it just doesn’t have the modern amenities that people look for in road bikes right now and that hurts it’s value and that’s something that the seller has got to come to grips with.
