  1. I have heard of bike chains becoming brittle from certain degreasers. May apply to some chemical in the rust dissolver, as well. It’s also possible that the rust had progressed far enough to ruin the chain before you attempted to remove it.

    If I encounter a seriously rusted chain, I replace without question.

  2. You need to buy a new chain. Rust remover won’t work to make an old rusty chain functional.

  3. Apparently this is called hydrogen embrittlement. Something to do with the chemical makeup of the degreaser exchanging hydrogen bonds with the chain, causing it to get extremely brittle. You can’t soak them for that long. A few hours tops
