I get really inconsistent engagement on my hub and I'm wondering if something is broken. The bike is an Ozark Trail Ridge, so the hubs are unknown brand and questionable quality to begin with.
At first I thought the wheel just had bad engagement but the more I rode it I realized it was inconsistent. Sometimes its "good" sometimes I go almost a quarter turn before it clicks.
Any idea what gives?
Do I need anew hub/wheel or is this fixable?

Its a slow engaging hub.
Totally normal.
A replacement freehub might fix it, or you might be able to take it apart and re lube the freehub. However it may be cheaper to just find a compatible wheel on marketplace or something.
It’s either got low engagement, or it’s slipping. When you’re doing it by hand like that, if it feels like it goes past a tick but then you put pressure on it and it skips past that tick, it’s slipping
