I stripped and blasted my GT ZR2000 to repaint it, and found a crack running a 1/3 way round the weld on the stem. Bloody lucky. Also lucky I could get it repaired at work.

Get it before it gets you, well spotted!
I would find a stem that doesn’t crack.
Aluminum has to be properly heat treated. Lose that heat treatment, like from welding and bad things happen.
