Myself and my partner are doing Hebridean way this coming July and while we are pretty much sorted when it comes to equipment, we are not sure what clothing to take.

We both have full cycling kit, but were wondering if that is really necessary?

I am swaying between road kit or cargo bib shorts + a sports/hiking t (something like picture).

She is wearing cargo bibs but not sure what on top.

We are also not sure if we should take heavy duty hiking waterproof (both have Rab Firewalls) or a lightweight running/cycling waterproof.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Jerseys are useless IMO. They stink up quickly, and don’t really do that much for cooling. Their only real advantage is that they have pockets, but touring bikes have plenty of places to stash stuff. Merino t-shirts are soooo much better in just about every way.

Personally, I just wear normal shorts, but that is 100% personal preference. If you do go for cycling bottoms, bibs are generally just more comfortable.

As for waterproof gear, stay light. You probably won’t want to be biking in anything that will wet out a light jacket anyway, and you’re better off just waiting it out in a cafe. For warmth, just use layers as necessary.

  2. I wouldn’t go without bibs, regardless if cargo or road. Definitely bibs, 2 sets so you can switch every day (wash one, let dry during the day wearing the other).

Personally I quite like jerseys as they are comfy and the pockets are very handy for long periods on the bike. However, wear whatever you like. It’s really down to what you feel comfortable with.

I don’t know the route but with all the ferries and “village hoping” I think a shirt and underlayer might actually be better suited.

As for waterproofs for the Scottish isles… Wind will likely be an issue also and you can get quite chilly if wet plus all the riding. I would likely take a heavier jacket but not a long one (like a parka), something around the waist so water doesn’t pool in the legs\lap area.

Think you’ll appreciate the heavier jacket at the end of the day and when exposed to the sea 🙂
