Firstly I’m a total novice in terms of bikes, but my dad recently passed and I’ve ended up with his old bike which I want to get back to its former glory. I realise it’s nothing fancy but is valuable to me. It’s probably 20 years old (at least) and not been ridden in 10 with no maintenance at all.

It seems to work ok, but the tires look a bit cracked, rust here and there, brakes not amazing.

What maintenance should I do to give it a new lease of life?

Sorry for your loss. If you want to get it perfect, you’ll want to replace the chain, tires, tubes, and brake pads, maybe cables. Good cleaning.

Tires, tubes and a cleaned and lubed chain at minimum. Good time to watch some videos and learn how to DIY. Having a shop do an overhaul will be pricey, plus parts.
