That’s not a bad idea at all.
I’d also put a strip of high viz / reflective tape on the milk crate. I know it may ruin your slick look, but more is more
Glad you’re all about safety, but how far above minimum insertion is that stem? You might lower it some only to give that brake line some relief.
Now put a piece of old carbide tip saw blade on the end.. That way you can show the scrape to the police….
