
Replaced for a customer today, anybody else had similar experiences with omniums or is this a one off? Bike was set up as singlespeed not fixed so it wouldn’t have been experiencing lots of additional torque through backpedaling. Both pedals were very tight, the DS pedal was actually still holding on to what was left of the crank arm.
Heard only good things about these cranks so it was a surprise to see.

A post earlier asking if the price is worth it had omniums and people where saying they would pay 200 for these. smh.
Heard of this, usually the gxp bottom bracket is the biggest weak point in the crankset
So happy I never sold my og silver omniums 7 years later still going holding up

I know a courier who has done this to 2 or 3 pairs of omniums. He exclusively uses rotor cranks now and hasn’t had any issues since
It happens every now and then. You’ve got to consider how omniums were advertised to people, as stiff as hell and durable as hell too. This gave people the idea that they can take a beating, when in reality, they’re still just cranks made for the track. Cranks on a track take a ton of abuse, but its a different kind of abuse compared to how people ride them on the street. Track cranks rarely deal with things like pedal strike or bar hopping with a few crashes here and there in between, or skidding or getting hit on curbs or people bunny hopping over railroad tracks.
Then, look at the shape of the crank around the pedal threads. It’s incredibly thin and narrow when compared to the bulge around the pedal threads on 75s or 7710s or 7600s or Records.
Now, consider all of that, while also remembering the millions and millions sold to people riding them on the road and abusing them with the belief that stiff = strong = tough. All of that will equal crank failures.
I still mostly blame the shape, but I think abuse added into the shape is what mostly causes it.
They’re good cranks, but like anything else on a bike where your drivetrain is also your brakes, they should be cleaned and inspected every now and then to look for cracks.
