This is my ‘84 Stumpjumper I purchased slightly used from Gregg’s Greenlake in 1986 for $600 iir. Several iterations over the years, and so many times it was poo poo’d when I would go into a shop. I mean think of all the next best things that have come along in that time..(only to wither away later). Clearly no longer a single-track bike, but has been a tourer for a long time. Did a trip from Seattle down the Oregon Coast and back up the valley to PDX.
The badge on the steer tube is a St. Christopher a friend gave me for the bike when I bought it. The chrome forks and stays are original, just under the paint when stock
Was the dark grey full stumpy (not sport). Had the bull moose. This last makeover was a covid rebuild. Paint and wheelset mostly . The flag crank I found NOS shortly after buying the bike.

You can really see the gravel logging road down hill ancestry in that head tube angle, and they were designed for a scrambler type bar … just saying… Nice bike. Goosbumps…

I remember the bike shop folks in the early 2000s who was surprised that I continued riding my 1994 Rockhopper Comp that I bought new in college. They were so stubbornly opinionated that aluminum bikes were the next best thing and steel was on its way out. Now steel is a hipster niche and those bikes that were previously ignored have found new life in those who are into lasting value and quality.

You got any pics of it in touring mode? I love when people tour with older mtbs, they are great for it.
