I’ve been riding my recently refurbed Trek for the past month or so, and have realized that it’s geared too tall. I went with a standard Claris group set with a 11/34 cassette and a 50/34 crankset. I’m looking at significantly lower cranksets (I’m thinking 44/28 or so), but the Claris front derailleur’s stated lower limits are a 46/30. Is that really the hard limit or would lower work? Is a different front derailleur in my future?

I do use 42/26, but I use friction bar end shifters to get around the headache around indexing.
